Colic--Fact or Fiction?

Well, when a baby fusses (which is doctor-talk for screaming inconsolably) from 11 pm to 4 am, it's hard not to believe in this mythical ailment. And everyone has a suggested cause, and a suggested solution: change the fortifier we're using, use only fresh breast milk, give her a full bottle of formula rather than breast milk, give her some different anti-gas. She just makes up her mind to be awake and crying at night. Sometimes putting her in her swing and holding her binky in her mouth (she spits it out after 3 minutes) works. Sometimes turning our lay-z-boy into a rocketing rocker works.

But last night, thankfully, she slept between feedings at midnight and 4. She's getting bigger, having a bit more awake time, and getting stronger. She rolled over for the first time the other night (Wednesday August 24), and has repeated it, both belly to back and back to belly, since then. She's working on holding her head up, and watching objects that move in front of her.

In other words, she's being an amazing, normal, baby. We have no real identities anymore, but she is certainly getting one.

Hi Susan:

I have just this morning found your blog, a project for a poetry class I'm taking at Willamette Univ, in Salem, Or, and I found it so early in the morning because I too suffer from screaming baby syndrome. Some days my Maria goes back to sleep (she's 4 months old now), and others she only smiles --just before she starts to scream again.

At any rate, I am enjoying your blog and looking forward to it in the future.

Best regards,

Pete Hayward
