Things I Miss from Academia
Running class only 3 hours/day (i.e., not being in meetings for 7 hours of the workday)
Being the subject matter expert in the room
Doing most of my work in my pajamas
Being able to relate my personal life to my professional life through writing
That feeling when a student finally gets it
Being in a gender majority on staff (I’m the only woman on my current and future teams)
Talking about literature at any point in the day
Having my ideas taken seriously
Feeling 100% accomplished every three months
Can you tell I've had some long days at work?

Things you shouldn't miss from academia:
Committee meetings for seven hours . . . two days a week.
"I'm sorry I'm turning my paper in late, but I was in a coma for the past three weeks."
Grading 50 papers, all of which start with the following phrase: "In society today . . ."
Dreams of sleeping through your alarm when you have an 8:30 AM class to teach.
Oh, there are more I can come up with, Sue, but I'm just too damn tired. . .
Thanks, O... for each of those I have developed an ability to counter with something from this pseudo-government/corporate world, too, but thanks fore reminding me it's not all A papers and perfect attendance...
